Protecting Your Hot Tub Over Winter
If you are planning to shut your hot tub or swim spa down for the winter months — or for any prolonged period of non-use — it is essential that the spa is properly winterised before temperatures drop. Water that remains in pumps, heaters, pipe unions and jet fittings will freeze as temperatures fall, and when water freezes, it expands. That expansion can crack pump housings, split pipe unions, fracture heater manifolds and cause thousands of pounds worth of damage that is entirely avoidable.
Hot Tub Tech provides professional hot tub and swim spa winterisation across Farnham, Guildford and the wider Surrey area, giving you complete peace of mind throughout the colder months.
What Does Our Winterisation Service Include?
- Chemical bioflush of the entire plumbing system — sanitises the pipework thoroughly before shutdown, ensuring no bacterial residue remains over winter.
- Full drain down of the spa
- High-pressure jet wash of the shell and hard cover — leaves the spa clean and free of dirt and algae
- Deep clean of the filters
- Disconnection and opening of pump and heater unions — allows complete evacuation of all trapped water from the plumbing, which is the key step in preventing frost damage
- Full pallet wrap of the spa and cover — creates a weatherproof seal that prevents rain ingress, debris accumulation and pest entry throughout the shutdown period
When Should I Winterise My Hot Tub?
We recommend booking your winterisation service from late October onwards. Ideally, the spa should be winterised before the first hard frost of the season, which typically occurs in November, though it can come earlier.
Do not wait until temperatures have already fallen significantly, as frost damage may have already occurred to unprotected components. If in doubt, book early.
What About Swim Spas?
Swim spas can also be winterised using the same process. Their larger water volumes and more complex plumbing networks mean the process takes a little longer, but the principle remains the same.
We have specific experience winterising swim spas and will ensure every plumbing section is fully drained.
Planning to Use Your Hot Tub Over Winter?
Many owners choose to keep their hot tub running over winter rather than shutting it down—and with the right care and insulation, this is perfectly viable.
